Community Management spend a huge amount of time talking to players, getting feedback on the community’s likes and dislikes, organising events and following the achievements of some of RuneScape’s greatest heroes.

Did you know that “RuneScape” is one of the top five searches on YouTube? We spend hours checking out latest films made by the many RuneScape movie boffins out there. They’re so good in fact, that we’ve teamed up with one of RuneScape’s most talented machinima (films made with game engines) masterminds, TehNoobShow, to launch a competition to seek out the most entertaining player-made RuneScape video known to humankind.

The rules are simple: create an original video short (around two minutes) that’s both entertaining and creative, in the RuneScape game.

The competition launches today, and you have until the closing date of 25th August to submit your videos on the YouTube website. When the entries are in, Andrew, Mark Gerhard and some video-hungry members of the Community Management team will then shortlist five finalists. Those five videos will then feature in a RuneScape weekly poll, allowing the community to choose their favourite.

The video with the most votes will be declared the winner and will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Jagex Games Studios, from wherever they are in the world, and, once here, they will get to meet the developers and creative types that bring RuneScape to life. We’ll then send them off with an armful of signed Jagex goodies. The four runners-up will bag some membership, autographed t-shirts, mugs, mouse mats, mice and other stuff.

Please note that all videos must be made within RuneScape (not live action), and must be submitted via YouTube. We cannot accept entries sent to the Postbag or Gallery email. We've created this thread to help you share ideas and hopefully answer each others video making based questions. We'll be tracking down some helpful guides and may even grab a couple of pros for a bit of Q&A at some point.

As time goes on, we'll then create an FAQ which we'll paste into one of these J-mod posts that Hohbein has so thoughtfully reserved.

FAQ

Q: Does this mean I have to come on my own?

A: We'd hate you to get lonely! So, if you win, we'll invite yourself and one other person to Jagex studio (all expenses paid). If you're under the age of 18 then of course this extra person will need to be a parent or guardian.

Q: What if I'm under 18? Can I still enter the competition and visit Jagex if I win??

A: You must be over 13 to enter. As mentioned above, if you're under 18 then you must bring a parent/guardian with you.

Q: If I enter the competition with a group of friends, do we all win prizes?

The prizes we send will remain the same regardless of how many people enter. If more than 1 person enters, it'll be up to them to split any prizes they receive between them!

Q: Does this mean I can name Youtube videos on the forums now?

A: I’m afraid not. The forum rules haven’t changed and you still shouldn’t point anybody to specific videos on Youtube. This is because it’s very difficult for players to know what a video will contain until it’s too late, and we’d hate for people to be sent to videos containing rule breaking or cheating.

Q: Is Tehnoobshow entering the competition?

A: No, Tehnoobshow has been helping us arrange the competition and created the awesome launch video you’ll see by visiting the RuneScape channel on Youtube. Don’t worry, though, he’ll be rewarded for helping us!

Q: Can I make an RSMV? (RuneScape Music Video)

Your video must comply with the Youtube terms of service - as long as it does, then the video can be in any style you'd like.

Q: How do I enter my video?

A: To quote from the rules video on the RuneScape channel:

1) Upload your video to Youtube and click the 'Compose' button
2) Attach your entry, put 'RuneScape Machinima Competition' in the subject box and then send it to RuneScape (www.youtube.com/runescape).

Q: How many videos can I enter?

A: Please only enter one video per person

Q: Can I use Youtube Annotations?

A: You can - but you must still include the words 'RuneScape Machinima Competition' and your RS account name in your video entry - this cannot be an annotation.

Q: When does the contest end?

A: The competition will end at midnight (BST) on the 25th August.

It's Poll day! Any time now the poll will be launched and you can vote on which of the five selected videos you'd like to win. We've done our absolute best to add as many videos as possible to the channel and have chased and searched for videos that weren't added for whatever reason.

If you're a concerned video maker whose been asking about your video, check out my post on page 183.

2nd September

Okay guys, we've added all we can add. Even after closing the 'my vids not been added thread' we've continued to search for videos that players have been concerned are not on the playlist.

Since we locked the thread though, every player whose concerns we've looked into either has their video already on the playlist and we've had to find it for them or it doesn't comply with the rules. Sorry but at some point we have to start insisting that people who are concerned check the playlists fully and check the rules as I think that in the vast majority of cases, that will answer their concerns. Otherwise, we'll never get the poll launched!

Hi guys,

We're going to launch the poll on Friday as we've still a few more videos to add to the channel.

As soon as we're done adding all videos (which we should have done by the end of today!) then we'll be get judging ready for the poll's release on Friday. We've seen some absolutely blinding entries already so competition is going to be fierce!

Hi guys, well time's almost up so if you still have a video to enter, now's the time to get it to us!

We've just posted the following news post on the front page to explain where we're at:

It’s been two weeks since we launched the RuneScape Machinima competition and we’ve watched around 700 entries so far! The deadline to submit videos is at midnight tonight (23:59 BST), so there’s still a little time left to put the finishing touches to your films and enter them into the competition.

Once the deadline passes, we’ll spend the next week getting the remaining entries added to the youtube.com/runescape channel. Following this, Jagex’s judges will make a shortlist of their top five films, then, in the first week of September, we’ll be running a player poll on the RuneScape website. The RuneScape community can choose their favourite from those final five, which will determine the overall winner.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their support, their messages and, of course, their videos. We knew that there were some really talented players out there, but had no idea there were quite so many! Finally, we’d also like to thank entrants for their patience as, due to the scale of the response, it is taking us slightly longer than anticipated to add all entries to the channel. Don’t worry, they will all be added, so the thousands who have subscribed to the channel will be able to view them all.
