1.4 === Introduction === |
The Runescape forums have long been a starting ground for clans. The forums give a new place to try and gather support for building up a party of players that share equal values. Like other aspects in life, being new can add a certain level of uncertainty for organizing your ideas into a package that appeals to others.
To help the clans, this thread has been made as a guide for how to run a successful clan. While this is not a complete guide, as the clan community is always progressing; it will give ideas for managing the warring, non-warring, pure, company, ect types of clans. Each adds something new and is different than the rest. Without having an example to build upon, it can be a frustrating endeavour.
Why stop with just describing how to run a clan? To be successful in the clan world, the change in the quality of a clan must start with the individual player. For this, there will also be information on how to be in a clan, run events, organizing, and develop leadership skills.
The guide here is not only for new players or beginning clans; it will be here for experienced ones as well. Often, older clans will try something new and be unsure as how to go about it. This guide will be a place where ideas will be shown through example a pool of concepts at everyones disposal.
Hopefully everyone will gain from this, as building a better community starts with the individual and then rises up to affect it as a whole. The Runescape forums are a wonderful place to spend time. Friendships are made here, alliances founded; new and exciting things happen that just couldnt anywhere else. So, to help everyone in being the best they can be and gaining knowledge of what can and what has not yet been done this guide is here.

1.7 === What is a Clan? === |
Imagine that you have spent several hours chopping yew trees with only those players next to you to talk with. You have thought to yourself, How great it would be to chat with someone who is interesting. This is the underlying purpose of a clan to be with likeminded individuals and experience Runescape together.
Because there are millions of players who play Runescape, there are millions of personalities that are seeking a refuge. The clans are there to bring people together and help them to spend their time bonding with one another to make the game more enjoyable than it would be alone.
Due to the many varying personalities; there is no one clan that can accommodate everyone. There are several base clan types that can be placed on the clans. These clan types will be discussed in more detail and describe their purposes in the following sections.
Clans are there solely for bringing people together. For this reason, the clans hold activities to help their members bond and enrich their game play. There are a wide variety of activities to partake in over the vast areas of Runescape. Sample events and planning will be discussed in further detail in sections 2.7 and 2.8 of this guide. These varying activities help give the clans a purpose and structure. What better way to help classify and decide on the type of clan you wish to be in except from the activities that you will be spending time on?
Clans are a wonderful thing and a community unlike any found in Runescape. To better understand and make the most of them, please read further in this guide. We will discuss each area of them in better detail and help build your knowledge up to take with you in your clan endeavors.
1.8 === Main Clan Types === |
Due to the many personalities and experiences that we all bring with us in life, it would be an injustice to try and have one clan that is a fit to everyone. We all have something that makes us unique, and it is this uniqueness that creates the differing styles of clans.
The first thing to look into when classifying a clan is the clans purpose. It is this purpose that differentiates it from the other types. A clan that is there to help players better their experience and chances of winning at Castle Wars would be different than a clan that went on nothing but Player Killing trips.
With the above in mind, there are main clan types, and sub clan types. There are four main clan types; Combat, Skill, Minigame/Event, and Business. Each of these types brings with it a different outlook on a players time in Runescape to reflect on the traits that the individual holds higher than others.
This clan type is there for those players that enjoy spending time with others through wars, player killing events, combat based minigames, and other aspects of Runescape that uses the players main combat skills.
This clan type focuses less on the players combat level and more on their total level. These clans tend to do more skill training in groups and minigames that focus less on combat.
These clans are set up around one minigame/event. They are filled with players after a common goal and use the clan as a way to bring like minded players together to better accomplish it.
Trade is one of the main things that drive a players progress in Runescape. It is natural to see a player wishing to make a profit. Because of this tendency, businesses will spur up to better focus a group of resources to accomplish this goal.
1.9 === Sub Clan Types === |
The four main clan types give a good idea about the personalities that inhabit Runescape, as well as those types of clans that tailor to them. However, it does not fully reflect on the dynamic tendencies that develop to better serve the players. For this reason, there are two centralistic labels that can be applied to a broader scale with definitions to match.
This is a sub combat class type of clan. They do enjoy focusing their efforts on combat type of events such as warring one another for ranks or fun but also enjoy a few of the traits shared by the other clan types. They may perform non-combat related skill events, events that focus on raising money for their war efforts, and other events which tailor to the personalities in the clan. For the most part however, they will focus on combat related goals and even the non-combat ones will in some way drive to the larger goal of the clan.
These clans centre around a particular theme that unites its members. Some popular choices are Elf, Star Wars and Lord of the Rings themes. The clans focus on a theme ensuring that the members all have a common interest. The clan is built up around this theme i.e. title, logo, history etc. Themes are unlimited and therefore gives rise to alot of differently themed clans.
Roleplaying clans revolve around a centralized focus. This could be a period of time or a group. The clan assimilates the cultural aspects of this and creates a structure of expectations that all members are expected to know and develop. The game of Runescape itself is a role-play and allows many different variations to work with this clan type.
